The wine we have tasted is the fruit of the most widespread black berry vine in Sardinia, Cannonau. A name that evokes in itself a marked territoriality, maybe the oldest vine in the Mediterranean area, with a path and a history that is lost in the mists of time. The recent discoveries on the island are indeed corroborating the millennial theses that make it even more protagonist of its strong belonging to Sardinia.
The different areas of the island differentiate the Cannonau thanks to the composition of the soils and the microclimate, and it is here that the winery Santa Maria la Palma uses, for this Reserve, three real Cru, areas that have shown their wine vocation over the years , further enhancing this true red heart of the island. Three small production areas with low production and therefore a further qualitative value, which wisely assembled together, give life to a real pride of the Alghero winery. This reserve has a color that tends towards garnet but expresses all its noble depth and the nuances of the glass are really very intriguing, but it is the smell that the riot of red fruit, accompanied by a spiciness with a few equal for a varietal in purity, already expresses in itself a concept of strength inextricably linked to its elegance.
Cannonau is above all this, an emotion so ancient and always current because the same olfactory sensations are then enhanced by an entrance in the mouth that confirms all its charm and makes the palate so rich in a balance also given by the wood that has refined it for a short time. We recommend the Cannonau reserve of La Palma winery with the furred game and with all those meat dishes of modern Italian cuisine, because its long history will make them even more current.
Company Profile
It all began in 1946, in the Nurra area, which had been reclaimed and given to the farmworkers following the Agrarian Reform that was implemented in Sardinia in the immediate post-war period. The locals were blessed with skilled, courageous hands that had the capacity to capture the soul of a part of the island that seems to have been designed for winemaking. And so, in 1959, one hundred of them decided to enter into a co-operative and to found the Cantina Santa Maria la Palma (Santa Maria la Palma Winery).
Today, past and future are being combined seamlessly through the new technologies deployed in every project put together by the Winery, which can leverage a tradition that has always married innovation to love for the local soil.
700 hectares of land on the estate are under vine, giving rise to a wealth of highly nuanced Sardinian wines, all made with the same passion and dedication as always, while also taking advantage of everything that state-of-the-art technology has to offer.
